The documents your consumer complaint affidavit actually needs
A plain-language checklist of the documents and proof you need for a consumer complaint and affidavit in India. Includes a tick-off tool and filing steps.
When you file a consumer complaint, the commission wants proof, not just a story. An affidavit and a neat set of papers make your case clear and strong. Here is a plain list of what to gather.
- An affidavit is a written statement, signed and sworn, that says “what I wrote is true”.
- Attach proof of payment, the problem, and your complaint to the company.
- Keep everything clear, in date order, and in PDF for online filing.
What is an affidavit?
An affidavit is your promise, in writing, that the facts in your complaint are true. You sign it before a notary or oath commissioner. It tells the commission you are honest, so write only what you can prove. Please check your local commission’s rule on stamp paper.

What goes inside the affidavit?
Keep it short and in simple steps. A good affidavit has these parts:
- Your details: name, age, address.
- The facts, in date order: what you bought, what you paid, what went wrong, and what the company did.
- Your attempts to solve it: when you complained and what they replied.
- A closing line: that the facts are true to the best of your knowledge.
- Signature and seal: signed by you and sworn before a notary or oath commissioner.
How to make your document list (index)
An index helps the commission find things fast. It can look like this:
| No. | Document | Date | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Invoice | 10 Jan 2025 | 1 |
| 2 | Bank payment proof | 10 Jan 2025 | 2 |
| 3 | Complaint email to company | 20 Mar 2025 | 3 |
| 4 | Company reply | 2 Apr 2025 | 4 |
Tips for screenshots and chats
- Show the date, time and phone number in every screenshot.
- Keep the original phone, email or file. Do not delete anything.
- For emails, chats and recordings, a certificate under Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam may be needed. Ask a lawyer or check with the commission.
- Make scans clear and easy to read.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing opinions or anger in the affidavit. Stick to facts and dates.
- Missing proof of payment.
- Blurry or cropped screenshots.
- Not keeping a copy of everything you file.
Common questions
Is an affidavit needed for a consumer complaint?
The commission usually expects your complaint to be supported by an affidavit that confirms your facts are true. Check the current rules or your commission’s practice.
Who can sign an affidavit?
You sign it yourself and swear it before a notary or an oath commissioner.
Do I need a lawyer to file?
No. You can file as a party in person, online on e-Jagriti. A lawyer can help but is not compulsory.
Are WhatsApp chats valid proof?
They can help as evidence. Keep the original phone and show the dates and numbers. Electronic records may need a certificate under Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Should I send the company a complaint before filing?
It is a good idea. A written complaint with a date and the company’s reply are strong proof that you tried to solve it first.
